The University of Regina's women's soccer team hosts its first home matches of the 2009 season this weekend, as the Cougars will square off with Alberta on Saturday and Saskatchewan on Sunday.
The Cougars (1-1-0) started off the season on the road last weekend, losing a 5-4 match to Calgary but recovering with a 3-2 victory over Lethbridge on Sunday. First-year forward
Meagan Cormier stole the spotlight for Regina, as she scored four goals and added two assists over the two games and was named the Canada West Female Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Cormier's first two goals came against the Dinos on Saturday, a match in which the Cougars led 4-1 late in the second half. Calgary came storming back, capping its rally with a free kick in the 90th minute to give the Dinos the victory. Sunday's match against Lethbridge was a polar opposite to the Calgary game, as the Cougars fell behind 2-0 early and scored three unanswered goals en route to a 3-2 win.
Tiffany Gyurek got the Cougars on the board at the 15-minute mark, and Cormier tied the game five minutes later and scored the game-winning goal at the 30-minute mark. All five of the match's goals were scored in the first half.
Alberta (0-2-0) comes into Saturday's match having lost twice to ranked teams last weekend, as the Pandas were defeated 4-1 by No. 8-ranked UBC and 1-0 by No. 1-ranked Trinity Western. Coached by Liz Jepsen, the Pandas will be led by veteran defenders Veronique Mayer and Keshia Wallin and midfielder Jacqueline Smith, as all three were named Canada West all-stars last season. Alberta will travel to Winnipeg following Saturday's match to face the Manitoba Bisons.
Saskatchewan (0-1-1) took a point off the No. 8-ranked team in the country last Sunday, getting a late goal from Andrea Guebert and recording a 1-1 tie against UBC at Griffiths Stadium. The Huskies started out the season with a 3-2 loss to Trinity Western on Saturday. Saskatchewan is led by third-year forward Elizabeth Hudon, who was named a Canada West second-team all-star following the 2008 season and scored the Huskies' second goal on Saturday against the Spartans. The Huskies will face the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday before coming to Regina for Sunday's match against the Cougars.
Both of this weekend's matches will kick off at noon at the U of R Field. Next weekend, the Cougars will travel for road matches at Fraser Valley and Victoria.
