LeMay gives Saskatchewan close win over Cougars

Jamie LeMay's goal in the 69th minute gave the Saskatchewan Huskies a 1-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon in a Canada West match played in blustery conditions at the U of R Field.

LeMay took a long cross from Lindsay Manz and beat her defender wide, then fired a shot over a sprawling Michelle Anderson and just inside the right post to give the Huskies (the lead midway through the second half.

The Cougars pressured for a late equalizer and had back-to-back corner kicks in the waning moments of the second half, but were unable to beat Saskatchewan keeper Alicia Middlebrook.

Middlebrook made two saves to record the clean sheet for Saskatchewan, helping the Huskies improve to 1-2-1 on the season. Anderson made five saves for the Cougars (1-3-0) in the loss.

Saskatchewan outshot Regina by a 12-7 margin during the contest.

Both teams will hit the road next weekend. The Huskies will travel for road matches against Calgary and Lethbridge, while the Cougars will square off with Fraser Valley and No. 3-ranked Victoria.

NOTES: The match was played with a strong northwest wind gusting well in excess of 50 kilometres per hour … Regina forward Meagan Cormier was held scoreless, snapping her goal-scoring streak at three matches.
