Paul Gareau poured in a career-high 42 points to lead the University of Regina's men's basketball team to an 88-70 win over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Gareau was 13-for-20 from the field and 16-for-19 from the free throw line. The third-year forward's 42 points stands as the second highest single-game total in school history, trailing only the 49 scored by Tyler Wright on Nov. 10, 2001.
“The whole team played well and moved the ball around nicely,” Gareau said following the game. “Coach told me before the game that my main priority was to stop (Calgary leading scorer Tyler) Fidler, so I certainly wasn't expecting to have a big game offensively.”
The Cougars never trailed in the contest, as Regina led by 10 at halftime and kept the lead in the double digits for the entire second half. The Cougars put the game away midway through the fourth quarter after consecutive buckets by Marek Dowranowicz,
Kris Heshka, and Gareau, which gave the home side a commanding 20-point advantage.
Sterling Nostedt was 4-for-7 from the three-point line and ended up with 12 points, while
Jeff Lukomski was 3-for-6 from downtown and scored 10. Downarowicz pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for the Cougars.
Philip Labongo came off the bench to lead Calgary with 18 points. Dustin Reding had 10 points for the Dinos, while Fidler – who came into the game averaging 18 points per game – was held to seven.
The win improves Regina's record to 5-4 on the season, while the Dinos fall to 4-5.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS.
NOTES: Gareau is the third player in U of R history to eclipse the 40-point barrier, joining Wright and Bill Johnson (41 in 1996-97) … the Cougars' win also snaps a 15-game losing streak the Dinos which dated back to the 1970-71 season.
