Jeff Lukomski's 27 points led the University of Regina's men's basketball team to an 80-58 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars jumped out to an eight-point lead after the first quarter, buoyed by a defensive effort that saw them limit the Dinos to just six points in the opening frame. The home side took a commanding 16-point lead into halftime, but a strong third quarter by the Dinos cut the deficit to just five points going into the fourth.
The U of R pulled away from the Dinos in a big way down the stretch, going on a 15-4 run over a span of four minutes midway through the quarter to seal the victory.
Lukomski was 9-for-20 from the field and hit six of his 13 three-point attempts, giving him a season-high 27 points.
Paul Gareau had 17 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double, while
Marek Downarowicz scored 13 points off the bench for the Cougars.
Keenan Milburn led Calgary with 16 points, while Matt Letkeman had 14 points and 11 rebounds to post a double-double. Philip Labongo added 10 points for the Dinos.
The win improves Regina's Canada West record to 6-4 on the season. The Cougars, who are tied with Alberta for fifth place in the conference standings, will meet the Golden Bears next weekend in Edmonton.
Calgary (4-6) will return to the hardcourt on Jan. 7 and Jan. 8 at home against Fraser Valley.
