The University of Regina's women's basketball team overcame a deficit that reached as many as 17 points to record a 72-67 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars trailed by 10 points after a first quarter which saw them score just seven points. It didn't get any better for the home side in the second, as Calgary led 39-16 late in the quarter and took a 14-point lead into halftime.

The turning point came in the third quarter, as the Cougars (9-1) reeled off 13 consecutive points – nine of which were scored by Joanna Zalesiak – to cut the deficit to just two. Regina took its first lead of the game late in the third and built the advantage up to six points twice in the fourth.

Calgary (3-7) tied the game at 64 with just over a minute left after a three-pointer by Megan Lang, but four free throws by Zalesiak, a wide-open layup by Carly Graham, and a couple key defensive stops sealed the win for the Cougars.

Zalesiak led all scorers with 19 points and added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Anne Mercer also registered a double-double for Regina, ending up with 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Lindsay Ledingham had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Gabrielle Gheyssen hit all three of her three-point attempts and ended up with 11.

Tilly Ettinger came off the bench to lead Calgary with 15 points, while Tamara Jarrett chipped in with 12.

The Cougars will finish off the first half of the conference next weekend with a pair of big games at Alberta, while Calgary resumes its Canada West schedule on Jan. 7 against Fraser Valley.
