The University of Regina's women's basketball team held the Lethbridge Pronghorns off the scoreboard for the first 13 minutes of the game and cruised to a 68-46 win in a Canada West game on Saturday afternoon at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars scored 28 consecutive points to open the game and clamped down on the defensive side of the ball, as Lethbridge didn't score until a layup by Kimberly Veldman at 3:24 of the second quarter.

“Once again, our first half was outstanding defensively,” Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. “Throwing a shutout for 13 and a half minutes requires great team defence. We're still inconsistent offensively and had too many turnovers, though. This weekend showed us we have some real strengths and some areas we still need to work on.”

Joanna Zalesiak was 9-for-13 from the field for the Cougars and led all players with 20 points. Lindsay Ledingham scored 11 for Regina, while Anne Mercer grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds.

Hannah Blanchette had 16 points for Lethbridge, while Kimberley Veldman and Becky Heninger both scored eight. Veldman tied Mercer for the game high with seven rebounds.

The win gives the Cougars four straight victories to open up the Canada West schedule, while Lethbridge falls to 2-4 on the season.

The U of R will travel for its first conference road games of the year next weekend, as the Cougars will square off against Trinity Western. Lethbridge will return home to host Saskatchewan.
