The University of Regina's men's basketball team was plagued by turnovers in a 107-80 loss to the Alberta Golden Bears in a Canada West game on Friday night in Edmonton.
The Cougars (6-5) had a chance to make a run at things after scoring eight straight points to open up the second half, but it was all Alberta from there. The Golden Bears (7-4) reeled off an 11-0 run of their own and kept the lead in the double digits for the remainder of the contest.
Regina shot .537 from the field, but the difference was turnovers. The Cougars had 35 of them compared to Alberta's 15, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Daniel Ferguson scored a game-high 30 points for Alberta, while Jordan Baker scored 21 and added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Four other Golden Bears also scored in double figures, including 13 from Kenneth Otienno and 11 each from C.G. Morrison, Graeme Mitchell, and Lyndon Taylor.
Marek Downarowicz came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 18 points and tie for the team lead with seven rebounds.
Paul Gareau was 8-for-9 from the field and scored 17, while
Jeff Lukomski had 14 and
Kris Heshka scored 10 and added seven rebounds.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Edmonton.
