The University of Regina's men's basketball team scored 61 points in the second half to overcome a 17-point halftime deficit and record a 93-85 road win over Alberta on Saturday night in Edmonton.
The Cougars went on a 12-0 run early in the third quarter to get back into the contest, then took the lead as the fourth approached. Regina went on a 13-2 run to open up a commanding 12-point lead midway through the fourth, but Alberta fought back.
The Golden Bears reeled off nine consecutive points to draw to within three points, but couldn't come any closer. A hook shot by
Kris Heshka put the Cougars back up by five, and the Cougars put the game out of reach with free throws in the final seconds.
Heshka ended up with a career-high 30 points and added 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Jeff Lukomski had 21 points for the Cougars, while
Paul Gareau scored 14.
Alberta was led by Daniel Ferguson's 32 points.
Both teams now sport identical 7-5 Canada West records heading into the December break. Regina and Alberta are tied for fifth place in the conference standings.
The Cougars return to action with a non-conference game at Williston State College on Jan. 5.
NOTES: Saturday's victory was the Cougars' first road win of the 2010-11 season.
