The University of Regina's men's basketball team still has a chance to host a first-round playoff series – but needs a two-game sweep over the Saskatchewan Huskies this weekend.
The teams will tip off at the CKHS at 8 p.m. following the women's game on Friday night, then play the back end of the home-and-home on Saturday night in Saskatoon.
A pair of wins would leapfrog the Cougars past Saskatchewan for second place in the Prairie Division, while the Huskies need just one win this weekend to clinch a home playoff date. The second-place finisher in the division will host Fraser Valley in the first round of the playoffs, while the third-place team will travel to Simon Fraser.
Jeff Lukomski, who leads the Cougars with an average of 14.6 points per game, is also narrowing in on the Canada West career three-point record. The fourth-year guard has 236 for his career, which is just three behind the record of 239 shared by UBC's Casey Archibald and Lethbridge's Danny Balderson.
Friday's game could mark the final game at the CKHS for
Paul Schubach and
Jamal Williams, who will both finish their five-year careers with the Cougars with over 1000 career points.
Saskatchewan's offence is led by fourth-year guard Showron Glover, who is in his second season as a Huskie after transferring from the College of the Sequoias. Glover averages a Canada West-leading 27.9 points per game.
This weekend will mark the first time since 2002 that Regina and Saskatchewan have played a two-game weekend series against each other. The two teams have both recorded three wins in their last six meetings dating back to the 2003-04 season.
Both games this weekend will have live stats and video webcasts available. Find the links on the front page of reginacougars.com under the calendar on the right-hand side.
