The University of Regina's men's basketball team was eliminated from the postseason on Saturday afternoon following a 96-77 loss to the Simon Fraser Clan in Burnaby, B.C.
The Cougars led by two after the first quarter, but Simon Fraser went on a 13-4 run to start the second and led by 10 at the half. The Clan then essentially put the game away with a 17-2 run to start the third quarter and coasted to a 19-point victory.
The victory gives Simon Fraser a berth in the Canada West Final Four, while Regina's season ends with the loss.
Matt Kuzminski – younger brother of former U of R forward Drew Kuzminski – was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line and scored a game-high 28 points for the Clan. Eric Burrell had 22 for Simon Fraser, while Kevin Shaw scored 17 and Sean Burke chipped in with 11 points.
Playing in his final game in a Cougar uniform, fifth-year forward
Jamal Williams scored 13 points to lead the Cougars.
Sterling Nostedt and
Jimmy Scroggins both had 12 for Regina, while
Kris Heshka scored 11.
The game also marked fifth-year point guard
Paul Schubach's final game with the Cougars. Schubach played just 12 minutes after getting into early foul trouble and fouled out of the game late in the third quarter. Heshka and
Jordan McFarlen also fouled out of the contest as the two teams combined for 48 fouls and 56 attempted free throws.
