The University of Regina's basketball teams return home this weekend for Friday and Saturday games against the Winnipeg Wesmen at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
On the women's side, the No. 2-ranked Cougars need just one win in their last four games to clinch first place in the Prairie Division and a home date for the first round of the playoffs. Regina is coming off a two-game road sweep over the Calgary Dinos, as the Cougars won by scores of 92-62 and 87-63 to improve their Canada West record to 14-2 on the season.
Brittany Read still leads Canada West in rebounding, as the third-year post averages 9.9 boards per game. Read has also scored a team-leading 15.3 points per contest this season, just ahead of
Joanna Zalesiak's average of 14.6 points per game.
Winnipeg's Caitlin Gooch averages 17.2 points per game, while Amy Ogidan – the 2008 Canada West Rookie of the Year – averages 12.8 points per contest. The Wesmen come into the weekend with a 10-7 record and have a single game against Manitoba left on the schedule following Saturday's game against the Cougars.
On the men's side, the Cougars (8-8) can secure a Canada West postseason berth this weekend with any combination of two Regina wins or Alberta losses.
Jeff Lukomski is closing in on a major conference record, as the fourth-year shooting guard has hit 230 three-pointers in his career at the U of R – just nine short of the Canada West record of 239, shared by UBC's Casey Archibald (2002-07) and Lethbridge's Danny Balderson (1993-95, 1997-00).
Winnipeg comes into the game with a record of 0-17, as the Wesmen are trying to avoid the first winless season by a Canada West team since 1980, when the Saskatchewan Huskies finished the campaign with an 0-20 mark.
The Wesmen are coached by Grant Richter, who took over after Dave Crook stepped aside in early January. Nick Lother (15.2) and Peter Lomuro (12.2) both average in double figures in points per game for Winnipeg.
The women's games start at 6:15 p.m. this weekend, with the men following with an 8 p.m. tip-off on both nights at the CKHS. All four games will be available via webcast at reginacougars.com.
