The University of Regina's women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season after dropping a 2-0 decision to the No. 1-ranked Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night in Langley, B.C.

Daniela Gerig notched both Trinity Western goals, scoring in the eighth minute and in the 82nd minute for the Spartans (3-0-0).

Michelle Anderson was spectacular in net for Regina (1-1-1), making nine saves during the contest – none better than her save off a penalty kick by Trinity Western's Melissa Mobilio in the 64th minute.

“We showed good spirit and became more comfortable and confident in our defensive duties after they scored early,” Cougars head coach Bob Maltman said. “We showed an ability to play out from pressure on several occasions, which is a great step forward.”

Kimbi Wiebe, who came on as a sub late in the game, had an opportunity for a late strike to pull the deficit to within one, but Trinity Western keeper Veronika Rogina came up with the save to preserve the shutout.

The Cougars will take on No. 3-ranked UBC (2-0-1) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. PDT in Vancouver.
