The University of Regina's women's basketball team scored a 78-56 victory over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The visiting WolfPack (7-8) stayed close to the No. 4-ranked Cougars through the first quarter, but Regina – playing its first Canada West game since early December – woke up in a big way in the second. The Cougars (11-2) reeled off 19 consecutive points, turning a two-point lead into a 21-point lead and seizing control of the contest.

“It was a strong team effort tonight, and we played one of our more consistent games this season,” Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. “(Joanna) Zalesiak got into foul trouble early, and Lindsay Ledingham took on a greater scoring role and had an outstanding game.”

Ledingham led all players with a season-high 20 points for the Cougars, while Anne Mercer and Zalesiak tied for the team lead with eight rebounds. All 12 players on the U of R roster had at least 10 minutes of floor time in the win.

Kailey Colonna had a game-high 11 rebounds for Thompson Rivers, while Diane Schuetze led the WolfPack with 17 points. One of the conference's leading three-point shooting teams, Thompson Rivers was 4-for-18 from beyond the arc during the contest.

Though Regina turned the ball over six more times than the WolfPack, the Cougars enjoyed big advantages in both shooting and rebounding. The Cougars shot 42% from the field – compared to Thompson Rivers' 29% – and outrebounded the WolfPack by a 55-38 margin.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

NOTES: The Cougars are now 6-1 all-time against Thompson Rivers and have won six consecutive games over the WolfPack … the Cougars remain mired in a three-way tie for second place, as both Saskatchewan and Winnipeg were also victorious on Friday night.
