Big third quarter powers Cougars to victory over Wesmen

The University of Regina's men's basketball team trailed by 11 points at halftime, but outscored Winnipeg by a 35-10 margin in the third quarter and went on to a 90-75 road victory over the Wesmen on Saturday night.

The Cougars opened the third quarter with 19 unanswered points, immediately turning a double-digit deficit into a double-digit lead. Regina led by 14 points after three and held off Winnipeg in the fourth, securing the team's 10th conference win of the season.

All five Cougar starters ended up scoring in double figures, led by Jeff Lukomski's 22. Lukomski was dangerous from the outside all night long, hitting seven of his 12 attempts from downtown.

Paul Gareau was just behind Lukomski with 21 points, while Kris Heshka scored 14, Marek Downarowicz had 13, and Darius Mole scored 12 and dished out a game-high eight assists.

Kelvin Smith scored a game-high 27 points for the Wesmen (2-14) in the loss.

The Cougars (10-6) return to action next weekend with a pair of road games against Fraser Valley (6-10).

NOTES: Lukomski now has 1397 career points, nine short of second-place Tyler Wright on the U of R's all-time scoring list and 25 short of Glen Nelson's school record of 1422 ... Lukomski is also Canada West's all-time career leader in three-pointers made (287) and attempted (804).
