Cougars win double-overtime thriller over Fraser Valley

It took two extra periods to settle the contest, but the University of Regina's men's basketball team finally took a 92-89 double overtime victory over Fraser Valley in a Canada West game on Friday night.

The Cougars looked to be on their way to victory after the first overtime, but Fraser Valley's Sam Freeman hit a long three pointer as time expired to send the game into another extra session.

First-year guard Jared Janotta calmly hit seven of his eight free throws in double overtime. Janotta hit two from the charity stripe with just 4.4 seconds left on the game clock to put the U of R up three. Fraser Valley's Joel Friesen was fouled immediately after the Cascades inbounded, but missed his first free throw with 1.2 seconds remaining to essentially seal the win for Regina.

The Cougars (11-6) were led by Paul Gareau, who hit 10 of his 14 free throws and scored a team-high 26 points. Kris Heshka had 19 points before leaving with a lower-body injury in the first overtime, and Marek Downarowicz registered a big double-double with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Sam Freeman was 7-for-17 from downtown had 29 points to lead Fraser Valley, while Zeon Gray scored 18 and Joel Friesen had 15.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Abbotsford.

NOTES: Jeff Lukomski had seven points for the Cougars to push the fifth-year shooting guard's career total up to 1404 … Lukomski needs three points to surpass Tyler Wright for second place on the U of R's all-time list and 19 to pass Glen Nelson as the school's all-time leader.
