Natalie Boyd had a goal and a pair of assists to lead the Trinity Western Spartans to a 4-0 win over the University of Regina on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West women's soccer match at the U of R Field.
Boyd opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing off a Daniela Gerig cross from the right side to the top corner to notch her first of the season.
Boyd's goal would be the only goal of the first half. Regina's
Tayler Firth had an opportunity to tie the game after stepping around a Trinity Western defender in the 35th minute, but her blast just missed the top left corner.
The Spartans' second goal came after Boyd found Tessa Meyer on the far side of the box in the 51st minute, and a superb one-timer by Meyer gave the fourth-year midfielder her second goal of the campaign. Just three minutes later, Boyd send Nikki Wright in all alone and the fourth-year forward tucked the ball past Regina goalkeeper
Michelle Anderson to give Trinity Western a three-goal cushion.
Regina's best scoring opportunity of the match came in the 72nd minute when
Tegan Koroluk snuck behind the Spartans defence following a lengthy boot by Anderson, but Koroluk's chip was stymied by a diving save from Trinity Western goalkeeper Kristen Funk.
Gerig capped the scoring with an insurance goal in the 81st minute.
Funk made two saves to secure her fourth shutout of the season for Trinity Western (5-1-0), which stays in second place in the Canada West standings with the victory.
Anderson made six saves for the Cougars (0-6-1).
Trinity Western will travel to Winnipeg today to square off with the Manitoba Bisons tomorrow, while the Cougars will host UBC (4-1-1) at noon on Sunday at the U of R Field.
