Men's basketball back at home as Cougars host Calgary

11/18/2011 10:50:00 AM

After a difficult start to the conference schedule that saw the U of R's men's basketball team play three teams ranked in the CIS Top Ten, the Cougars will try to break the goose egg in the win column this weekend against Calgary.

Sterling Nostedt and Paul Gareau have provided much of the offence so far for the Cougars, with Nostedt scoring 15.7 points per game and ranking second in the conference with an average of four made three-pointers per contest. Gareau averages 13.7 points per game, and – as usual – leads the team in field goal percentage (45.5%).

Nostedt, Gareau, Brendan Hebert, and Connor Burns have each started all three games for Regina, while newcomer Gradyn Childerhose has gotten the start in two of the team's first three contests.

Calgary comes into the weekend with a 2-2 record after starting out the season with a weekend split at Brandon and recording a loss to Thompson Rivers and a win over UBC Okanagan at home last weekend. Second-year guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson is Calgary's leader with 16.3 points per game, with Tyler Fidler's average of 14.3 not too far behind.

Friday's and Saturday's games will both be webcast live at www.canadawest.tv.

The Cougars hit the road next weekend to finish off the first half of their Canada West schedule. They'll take on conference newcomer UBC Okanagan on Friday night in Kelowna, B.C. before playing Thompson Rivers on Saturday in Kamloops.

NOTES: Gareau is just seven free throws away from 200 for his career and 21 points from breaking the 700-point barrier.
