The University of Saskatchewan Huskies scored a convincing 105-68 road victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night as both teams opened up their Canada West schedules at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

It looked as though the Cougars might be able to hang with the No. 3-ranked Huskies for the first part of the game, but the wheels fell off the proverbial bus late in the second quarter. After a Connor Burns jumper tied the game with 2:44 left in the first half, the Huskies scored ten unanswered points to take a 45-35 lead at the half. Saskatchewan (1-0) continued that momentum into the second half, outscoring the Cougars by a 26-14 margin in the third quarter and continuing the offensive display with 34 more points in the fourth.

Five Huskies scored in double figures in the win, led by Evan Ostertag's 19 points in 21 minutes off the bench. Duncan Jones had 18 points, while Nick Foth (12 points), Jamelle Barrett (11), and Chris Unsworth (10) also scored at least 10. Ben Baker had seven points and a team-leading seven rebounds for Saskatchewan, which shot an impressive 72% from the field in the second half and 62% for the game.

Making his first Canada West start for the Cougars, Briercrest College transfer Gradyn Childerhose had a team-high 18 points. Sterling Nostedt chipped in with 16 points, while Paul Gareau scored eight and led all players with eight rebounds.

Saskatchewan and No. 6 Alberta (1-1) will do battle in Edmonton next weekend, while the Cougars (0-1) will travel for a pair of road games against Victoria (2-0) and No. 5 UBC (0-0).

NOTES: Regina attempted 36 three-pointers in the loss, the third most by the Cougars in a single game since joining Canada West prior to the 2001-02 season.
