Cougars score four-set win over Saskatchewan; can clinch playoff spot with win on Saturday

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team pulled into sole possession of seventh place in the Canada West standings with a 3-1 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Regina's win, coupled with Brandon's 3-0 win over Winnipeg, means that the No. 10-ranked Cougars (7-10) can clinch a Canada West postseason berth with another victory over the Huskies on Saturday night.

The Cougars opened up Friday's match with a 25-15 win, but Saskatchewan recovered to edge Regina by a 25-23 margin in the second. The Cougars had a dominant third set, winning 25-10 to take a 2-1 lead in the match, and clinched the victory with a 25-19 victory in the fourth.

Tiffany Herman had a fine match for Regina, ending up with 53 assists, 11 digs, and a team-high five total blocks. Solveig Nilson had a career-high 14 kills and no errors, ending up leading all players with a blistering .609 hitting percentage.

Kaitlyn Hughes had 13 kills and eight digs for the Cougars, while Meagan Onstad had 10 kills and 10 digs and Roxanne Olynyk chipped in with 11 kills and nine digs. Rebecca Rink had a team-high 20 digs.

Katie Graves was stellar defensively for Saskatchewan, leading all players with 27 digs and adding 11 kills for a double-double. Candace Hueser led the Huskies (2-15) with 12 kills, while libero Haley Manson had 11 digs.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS following the conclusion of the men's match.

NOTES: Herman's 53 assists is the second-highest total in a four-set match by a U of R player since Canada West began tracking the statistic in 2002 … Herman set the school record at 55 two weekends ago against Brandon … all four volleyball matches this weekend will be available on Max Local on Demand.
