Paul Gareau scored a team-high 29 points, but the University of Regina's men's basketball team was defeated 110-83 by the No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night in Saskatoon.
The Cougars were within seven points of the Huskies in the early stages of the second half, but Saskatchewan reeled off 13 consecutive points as part of a 23-5 run in the third quarter and cruised to its 18th conference victory of the season.
Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Gareau was 10-for-14 from the field, hit nine of his 10 free throws, and added nine rebounds and four steals to his 29 points.
Jamelle Barrett led all players with 33 points for Saskatchewan, while Duncan Jones scored 23. Michael Lieffers had 15 points and 11 rebounds to register a double-double for the Huskies.
Marek Downarowicz also had 15 points for the Cougars and
Jeff Lukomski had 13.
The Cougars will play their final home games of the season next weekend at the CKHS, as they'll entertain Manitoba (9-13) on Friday and Saturday night.
NOTES: Regina and Saskatchewan will meet again in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series beginning Friday, Feb. 25 in Saskatoon.
