Cougars, Trinity Western meet in Canada West quarterfinals

2/16/2011 1:22:52 PM

For the third time in the past six years, the University of Regina's women's volleyball team will travel to Langley, B.C. for a Canada West quarterfinal series at Trinity Western.

The Cougars secured the final Canada West postseason berth last weekend with a two-match sweep over Saskatchewan, winning on both Friday and Saturday to nail down seventh place in the conference standings with an 8-10 record.

Ranked No. 10 in the CIS, the Cougars' offence is controlled by fourth-year setter Tiffany Herman. Herman led the conference with an average of 10.19 assists per set, which also marks the first time that a U of R setter has averaged at least 10 over an entire season.

The Cougars were one of just two Canada West teams to have five players record at least 100 kills this season, led by 188 by Meagan Onstad and 158 by both Kaitlyn Hughes and Roxanne Olynyk. Michelle Sweeting had 127 kills, while Solveig Nilson chipped in with 111.

Fourth-year libero Rebecca Rink led the Cougars with 185 digs this season, while Onstad ended up with 173. Sweeting had a team-high 54 total blocks, with Nilson close behind with 49.

Trinity Western comes into the series ranked No. 3 in the CIS. The Spartans, who finished in second place in the Canada West standings with a 15-3 record, are 3-0 against the Cougars this season. Trinity Western won a non-conference match in October and took a pair of mid-November Canada West matches over the Cougars in Regina.

The Spartans feature one of the conference's top outside hitters, as Kara Jansen Van Doorn led Canada West with 257 kills (3.67 per set). Andrea Ball finished second in the conference with 270 digs, while first-year middle blocker Alicia Perrin also ranked second in Canada West with 88 total blocks.

The teams will meet on Thursday and Friday at 6:15 p.m. PST at the Langley Events Centre. Should a third match be necessary, it'll be held on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Trinity Western will have a video webcast and live statistics available for both matches.
