The University of Regina's women's basketball team scored 18 consecutive points during a furious six-minute run that spanned the third and fourth quarters and went on to claim a 71-60 win over Manitoba on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Manitoba's Stephanie Gill hit a three-pointer in the opening minute to give the Bisons the lead, setting the tone for the first three quarters. The visitors held the lead for the first 31 minutes of the contest, opening up as much as a 14-point advantage in the early stages of the third quarter.
The No. 5-ranked Cougars finally woke up late in the third, scoring the final seven points of the quarter and the first 11 of the fourth quarter to take the lead for good. At one point late in the contest, Regina had scored 29 of the game's last 34 points.
The Cougars were 12-for-38 (31.6%) from the field over the first three quarters, but shot 69.2% during the fourth. Manitoba shot 26.4% from the field over the game and just 11.8% in the final stanza.
Lindsay Ledingham scored a team-high 20 points for the Cougars and added 11 rebounds to register her fourth double-double of the season.
Joanna Zalesiak wasn't too far off a triple-double, ending up with 14 rebounds, nine points, and eight assists.
Danielle Schmidt was 7-for-10 from the field and scored a career-high 19 for Regina.
Mubo Ilelaboye led all players with 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Manitoba (8-16), while Allison Balasko and Vanessa De Vries both chipped in with nine. DeVries added a team-leading nine rebounds.
The Cougars will now prepare to host a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series against the University of Victoria. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday night at 7 p.m. at the CKHS.
