Huskies take lead over U of R in quarterfinal series with 98-75 win

Box Score The University of Regina's men's basketball team suffered a 98-75 loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies in Game 1 of a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal on Friday night in Saskatoon.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 12-5 advantage in the first quarter, but Saskatchewan went on a 16-2 run to take the lead for good. The Huskies led by eight after the opening 10 minutes and by 19 at the half.

Saskatchewan came out firing to start the third quarter, scoring 15 of the first 21 points of the second half. The Cougars replied with a 21-7 run of their own to cut the deficit to 14, but that was as close as they would come. Saskatchewan regained the 20-point lead midway through the fourth and held off the Cougars for the win.

Rejean Chabot was 13-for-28 from the field and led all players with 29 points for the Huskies, while Jamelle Barrett added 23.

Jeff Lukomski hit five three-pointers and led the Cougars with 23 points. Paul Gareau scored 20 for Regina.

The two teams will play Game 2 on Saturday night in Saskatoon.
