The University of Regina's men's basketball team hung with No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan for the first half, but the Huskies pulled away in the third quarter and won 92-75 on Saturday night to take a two-game sweep over the Cougars in the best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series.

The Cougars were within seven points of the Huskies early in the second half, but Saskatchewan had built up a 20-point advantage by the end of the third and led by as many as 26 early in the fourth quarter.

A three-pointer by rookie guard Brendan Hebert cut the deficit to 14 with four minutes left, but that was as close as the Cougars were able to come.

Jamelle Barrett led all players with 30 points and nine assists for Saskatchewan, while Rejean Chabot scored 24.

Paul Gareau had a team-high 20 points for the Cougars, while Marek Downarowicz scored 15 and added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Kris Heshka ended up with 14 points for Regina, with Hebert adding nine off the bench for the U of R.

Saskatchewan advances to the Canada West Final Four next weekend in Vancouver along with UBC, Trinity Western, and Alberta.

NOTES: Saturday marked the final CIS game for four fifth-year Cougars, including Downarowicz, Heshka, Lynn Gee, and Jeff Lukomski.
