The last time the UBC Thunderbirds were in town to face the University of Regina's men's basketball team, the result was one of the best games ever played in the six-season history of the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars won that game by a 76-73 score over then-No. 1 UBC back in November of 2008, spoiling what had been an undefeated season for the Thunderbirds up to that point.
Over two seasons later, UBC finally returns to Regina. The Thunderbirds remain one of the nation's elite teams, as UBC is ranked No. 2 in this week's CIS Top Ten and sports a 16-2 Canada West record as well as a 12-game winning streak.
The Cougars are also one of the hotter teams in the conference, having won six of their past seven Canada West games. Regina (12-6) sits in fifth place in the conference standings with six games left in the regular season.
Jeff Lukomski has an excellent chance of breaking the University of Regina's all-time scoring record this weekend, as he enters the weekend with 1417 career points – just five less than the school's current leader, Glen Nelson (1980-85). Lukomski is already Canada West's all-time leader with 292 three-pointers over his five seasons with the Cougars.
Paul Gareau continues to shine for the Cougars, as the third-year forward has at least 20 points in all six of the team's games since the December break. Gareau ranks fifth in Canada West with an average of 19.7 points per game and also has a team-leading 17 blocks this season.
UBC's Josh Whyte – the reigning Canada West MVP – shoots 47.4% from downtown and leads the Thunderbirds with an average of 18 points per game. Nathan Yu (12.0), Brent Malish (11.9), and Doug Plumb (10.8) also average in double figures for the Thunderbirds.
UBC will end their Canada West schedule with games against Thompson Rivers and Victoria, while the Cougars have a home-and-home with Saskatchewan and two home games against Manitoba remaining on the docket.
