The University of Regina's men's basketball team got off to a strong start, but gave up 12 consecutive points midway through the second half and lost 94-83 to Manitoba on Saturday night in Winnipeg.
After suffering a 29-point loss on Friday, the Cougars opened up a double-digit lead in the first quarter and led by as many as 13 points early in the second. Regina held onto the lead through halftime, but the Bisons put together a 25-6 run over the last seven minutes of the third and the first minute of the fourth to seize control of the contest.
The Cougars drew to within four points with two minutes left after a
Vule Grujic free throw, but a pair of buckets by Stephan Walton and one by Jonar Huertas quickly restored Manitoba's double-digit advantage.
Kevin Oliver had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead Manitoba, while Kurtis Sansregret scored 16 and Huertas ended up with 13. Walton and Keith Omoerah both chipped in with 11 points.
Six Cougars broke into double figures in scoring, including all five starters.
Paul Gareau led the way with 16 points, while
Connor Burns scored 12 and added 10 rebounds to notch his second double-double in as many nights.
Jared Janotta had 13 points and six assists, with
Brendan Hebert and
Sterling Nostedt scoring 10 points apiece. Grujic came off the bench to score 11 points.
The Cougars (3-8) return to the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport next weekend to play their first home games in over two months. Regina will host Fraser Valley (7-5) on Friday night and Trinity Western (6-6) on Saturday. Both games will tip off at 8 p.m. following the women's game.
