Box Score
The University of Regina's women's basketball team improved to 12-0 after a 78-61 win over No. 10 Fraser Valley on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars led by eight at the half and looked to be pulling away after extending the advantage to double digits early in the third quarter, but Fraser Valley had other ideas. The Cascades reeled off 13 consecutive points to take a lead of their own, and after a couple of traded leads a banked three-pointer by Tessa Klassen at the buzzer pulled Fraser Valley to within one point going into the fourth.
Regina opened up the final quarter with a 9-0 run before a Cascades run brought the visitors back to within five midway through the fourth, but that would be as close as Fraser Valley would come. The Cougars put together 13 straight points to put a stranglehold on the game and coasted to their 12th win in as many Canada West games, marking the first time in program history that a U of R women's basketball team has started out the conference schedule with 12 consecutive victories.
Michelle Clark got into foul trouble and sat out a large portion of the second half, but still ended up leading all players with 22 points.
Joanna Zalesiak had 19 points and led the Cougars in both rebounds (10) and assists (6), while
Lindsay Ledingham added 12 points.
Nicole Wierks and Kayli Marion-Sartori both scored 14 points to lead Fraser Valley (9-4). Sarah Wierks led all players with 11 rebounds for the Cascades, who will make the short trip east to Brandon to square off with the Bobcats on Saturday night.
The Cougars will play host to Trinity Western (7-6) tomorrow night at the CKHS. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
