The Trinity Western Spartans led from start to finish in a 104-68 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in Canada West men's basketball action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The two teams traded leads 10 times over the first 16 minutes of the first half, but Trinity Western exploded with a 22-3 run in the second quarter to suck all the energy out of the CKHS. The Spartans took an 18-point lead into halftime, then put the game away with an 11-3 run in the third quarter that pushed the lead in excess of 30.
Seven Spartans broke into double figures in scoring, led by Calvin Westbrook's 19 points. Lucian Sauciuc came off the bench to pour in 15 points – all of which came on his game-high five three-pointers – in just 13 minutes on the floor. Tristan Smith and Kurtis Osborne both had 14 points, while Sean Peter, Justin Bakuteka, and Tyler Linttell all had 11.
Osborne, Taylor Heinrichs, and Lucas Nugteren all tied for the Trinity Western lead with seven rebounds.
Connor Burns led the Cougars with 15 points and eight rebounds, while
Paul Gareau had nine points in the first quarter and ended up with 13 for the game. The Cougars (3-10) will prepare for their second of three consecutive home weekends at the CKHS, as they'll play host to Winnipeg next Friday and Saturday night.
With the win, the Spartans (8-6) extend their winning streak to six games and keep pace with Fraser Valley and remain a game back of the Cascades for third place in the Pacific Division. Trinity Western and Fraser Valley will clash next Saturday in Abbotsford.
