The University of Regina's women's basketball lead got off to a quick start and cruised to a 98-71 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday night in Canada West action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

After taking a six-point lead into the second quarter, the No. 1-ranked Cougars caught fire and went on a huge 17-1 run to open up a 20-point lead by the four-minute mark of the period. The Cougars shot 50% in the first half alone and held an 18-point advantage at the break.

Winnipeg (8-8) mounted a brief charge late in the third quarter and scored 11 consecutive points to cut the lead down to 12, but back-to-back three-pointers by Michelle Clark restored order for the Cougars.

Regina (15-0) was led by Lindsay Ledingham, who scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds in 26 minutes. Clark (18 points), Danielle Schmidt (12), and Brittany Read (11) also scored in double figures for the Cougars, while Jennilea Coppola came off the bench to lead all players with 12 rebounds.

Yael Kaplan led Winnipeg with 20 points before fouling out for the second consecutive night in the fourth. Amy Ogidan scored 17 for the Wesmen, while Stephanie Kleysen chipped in with 13 points.

Winnipeg hosts Saskatchewan next weekend, while the Cougars will entertain Alberta next Friday and Saturday as they play at the CKHS for the third weekend in a row.

NOTES: For the second game in a row, all 12 University of Regina players scored at least one point in the victory ... Clark's 18 points all came from downtown as she becomes the first U of R player to hit six three-pointers in more than one Canada West game.
