Box Score
The University of Regina's women's soccer team set a program record for wins in a season after registering a 1-0 shutout victory over Mount Royal on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West game at the U of R Field.
Tayler Firth (pictured) scored the game's only goal late in the first half, while
Stephanie Possberg made five saves to notch her fourth clean sheet of the conference schedule.
The victory improves Regina's record to 6-3-0. The U of R's sixth Canada West win of the schedule breaks the program's old record of five, which was set back during the 2010 campaign when the team had a 5-7-2 mark.
The game started out with an early chance by Mount Royal. Possberg got to a free kick from the left and cleared it away, but Mount Royal's Kristen Bloom unleashed a long volley off the punch that glanced off the cross bar.
Regina's
Meagan Cormier fed a dangerous low cross into the box in the 19th minute, but Firth was unable to connect with the ball as it passed through a maze of players. That sparked a counter-attack going the other way, but Kelsey Kinzner's effort following a Mount Royal corner kick also went off the cross bar.
Cormier had a nice chance in the 27th minute after a solo raid down the left side, but Mount Royal keeper Kelsey Markland was up to the task and made likely the most difficult of her four saves on the afternoon.
Regina broke through in the 38th minute following some more work by Cormier down the left side. Cormier's cross was nicely redirected by
Jayde McFee directly to Firth in the box, who scored her third goal of the season and notched what would be the only goal of the contest.
Mount Royal had a few chances to tie it up in the second half, including in the 56th minute when halftime substitute Ashleigh Wroe broke up the middle and forced Possberg to make her finest save of the match. Fifth-year defender
Sarah Novak's slide tackle broke up another quality Mount Royal chance with the visitors threatening midway through the second.
The shots were almost even for the match, with Mount Royal registering 16 shots to Regina's 15.
Mount Royal (0-6-3) will now travel to Saskatoon for a match against the University of Saskatchewan (5-4-0) on Sunday, while Regina will host No. 4-ranked Alberta (5-1-3) at the U of R Field. Kickoff for both matches is scheduled for noon.
NOTES: The U of R needs just one more point to clinch a Canada West postseason berth ... the Cougars can also clinch a playoff spot if Manitoba doesn't defeat Calgary on Saturday night.
