The University of Regina's women's soccer team will host a Canada West quarterfinal match next weekend after defeating Calgary by a 2-1 score on Sunday afternoon in frigid conditions at McMahon Field.
The Cougars will enter the postseason as the conference's No. 4 seed and will host No. 5-seeded Saskatchewan on Sunday, Oct. 28 at the U of R Field. Kickoff is scheduled for noon, with the winner advancing to the Canada West Final Four the following weekend.
Jayde McFee and
Molly Glass both scored for the Cougars, with McFee's goal coming in the 63rd minute and Glass's goal in the 79th. Lauren Deeks scored for Calgary to pull the Dinos to within one in the 82nd minute, but the Cougars were able to hold on for the victory.
Stephanie Possberg got the start in net for the Cougars and made two saves to secure the victory. The Cougars had a 19-5 edge in attempted shots for the match, with Calgary keeper Kristen Barton making four saves.
The victory gives the Cougars an 8-3-1 record for the Canada West schedule, smashing program records for wins and points (25) in a single season.
Regina and Saskatchewan (8-4-0) met once during conference play, with the Cougars getting a goal from
Meagan Cormier and a shutout from
Stephanie Possberg in a 1-0 victory over the Huskies in the season opener back on Sept. 8.
The other three quarterfinals next weekend will have No. 1 Trinity Western hosting No. 8 Manitoba, No. 2-seeded Victoria playing host to No. 7 Fraser Valley, and No. 3 UBC hosting No. 6-seeded Alberta. The Canada West Final Four will be hosted by the highest seed to advance through the conference quarterfinals.
NOTES: The Cougars are in the playoffs for the second time in history and for the first time since 2006.
