Box Score
The No. 2-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team was topped 70-65 in overtime by No. 6 Saskatchewan in both teams' Canada West opener on Thursday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Kiera Lyons led Saskatchewan with 21 points, while Dalyce Emmerson had the game's lone double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Riley Humbert had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Brittany Read led the Cougars with 19 points and four steals in the loss.
The Cougars had a double-digit lead in the early stages of the fourth quarter and still had a healthy lead after a
Jennilea Coppola layup gave them a seven-point lead with 3:51 left, but that would turn out to be Regina's last points of regulation. Saskatchewan scored seven consecutive points, sending the game into overtime.
The Cougars took an early lead in the extra session after a Read layup, but Saskatchewan tied it up on the ensuing possession and a three-point play by Kelsey Trulsrud gave the Huskies a lead they would never relinquish. Regina cut a six-point deficit down to three points with 76 seconds left, but a missed shot and two fatal turnovers essentially clinched the win for Saskatchewan.
Trulsrud ended up with seven points and nine rebounds in the win for the Huskies.
Besides Read's 19 points,
Lindsay Ledingham (13 points) and
Michelle Clark (10) also broke into double figures in scoring. Ledingham pulled down nine rebounds to fall just short of a double-double, while
Charlotte Kot had eight points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes played in the first Canada West game of her career.
The two teams will meet again in Saskatoon on Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
NOTES: The loss was the U of R's first in a conference game since a 100-87 setback to Saskatchewan on Feb. 12, 2011.
