The University of Regina's men's basketball team opened the game on a 16-2 run and kept the lead the rest of the way, winning 74-68 over UBC Okanagan on Saturday in Kelowna.
UBC Okanagan scored nine consecutive points late in the first quarter and early in the second to get to within four points, but the Cougars pushed back and built the lead back up to nine at halftime. The Cougars led by double digits for much of the second half, and immediately answered a resounding dunk by UBC Okanagan's Azi Fahandeg-Sadi midway through the fourth with a
Frank Brown three-pointer that got the lead back up to 10.
UBC Okanagan got the lead down to four with 20 seconds left, but that was as close as they came as the Cougars hit five of their six free throw attempts to help seal the win.
Brown was 4-for-9 from the three-point line and ended up with 23 points, while
Paul Gareau (14 points),
Connor Burns (14), and
Brendan Hebert (10) also scored in double figures. Burns added 12 rebounds to record his second consecutive double-double.
Mitch Goodwin led UBC Okanagan with 23 points, while Fahandeg-Sadi scored 20.
The Cougars (2-6) will host Trinity Western (2-6) and Fraser Valley (5-3) next Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
