After taking a step forward last weekend with a road split, the University of Regina's men's basketball team is back at home this weekend with games against Trinity Western and Fraser Valley at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars (2-6) lost 78-64 to Thompson Rivers last Friday, but recovered for a 74-68 win over UBC Okanagan on Saturday. It was a significant improvement on defence for the Cougars, as the U of R entered the weekend ranked last in the conference in points allowed but put together its best two defensive efforts of the season.
Connor Burns had a solid weekend for the Cougars, collecting his first two double-doubles of the season after falling one rebound short of the milestone in three of the previous four games leading up to last weekend's contests. Burns had 19 points and 13 rebounds on Friday and added 14 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday's win.
Frank Brown was quiet on Friday, but was 4-for-9 from three-point range and tied for the game high with 23 points in the victory on Saturday. The second-year transfer from Phoenix College comes into the weekend averaging a team-leading 16.8 points per game and is tied for third in the conference with 23 three-pointers made this season.
Fifth-year forward
Paul Gareau (12.1 ppg) and third-year guard
Brendan Hebert (7.0 ppg) join Brown and Burns in the starting lineup, while third-year guard
Darius Mole stepped in as a starter last weekend for the first time since being injured in a non-conference game last season.
Trinity Western also comes into the weekend with a 2-6 conference record. The Spartans, who collected their two wins in back-to-back road victories over UNBC and Victoria earlier this month, are coming off of home losses to Winnipeg and Manitoba and have lost three consecutive Canada West games.
In his first season with Trinity Western after transferring from Humber College in Toronto, Mark Perrin leads the Spartans and ranks second in the conference with an average of 21.6 points per game. Perrin, a 6-1 guard, averages a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game and also leads the team in both steals (24) and assists (10).
Denny McDonald averages 13.6 points per game for the Spartans, while Kurtis Osborne and Tristan Smith also average in double figures. Third-year forward Tonner Jackson scored 20 points in his only Canada West game of the season earlier this month against UBC, but remains questionable after being hurt in that contest.
Fraser Valley (5-3) has recovered nicely from a three-game losing streak earlier this year, as the No. 6-ranked Cascades have reeled off three consecutive wins since then and enter the weekend in third place in Canada West's Pacific Division.
Guided by first-year head coach Adam Friesen, the Cascades have enjoyed the contribution of arguably the best one-two scoring punch in the conference this season. Fifth-year guard Sam Freeman comes into the weekend averaging 21 points per game, while Kevon Parchment – a second-year transfer from Lakeland University – averages 19.4 points per game as the Cascades boast two of the conference's top five scorers.
Fifth-year forward Kyle Grewal is averaging 13.9 points per game for Fraser Valley and is tied with Parchment for the team lead in rebounds, while Nathan Kendall shoots a Canada West-leading 50% from beyond the arc.
Fraser Valley will face Brandon on Friday before heading to Regina.
