The University of Regina's women's basketball team puts its seven-game winning streak on the line this weekend as the Cougars host Trinity Western and Fraser Valley at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Trinity Western is in town on Friday night, while No. 2-ranked Fraser Valley visits on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 6:15 p.m.
The Cougars (7-1) are coming off of a pair of road wins last weekend, as they took out Thompson Rivers by an 84-64 margin on Friday night and defeated UBC Okanagan 76-64 on Saturday. They sit in second place in Canada West's Prairie Division behind only No. 8-ranked Calgary, as the Dinos have gone through the first eight conference games of the season without a loss.
Michelle Clark piled up 38 points in last weekend's two wins and continues to rank among Canada West's leaders with an average of 18.3 points per game. She's also the conference leader with 29 steals so far, while post
Brittany Read leads the team in rebounds and ranks second in Canada West with a .621 field goal percentage.
Besides Clark and Read, expect fifth-year veterans
Lindsay Ledingham (12.1 ppg) and
Danielle Schmidt (8.4 ppg) to be in the starting lineup for the Cougars.
Megan Chamberlin has also started five of the last six games for the U of R, though guard
Kehlsie Crone worked her way into the starting lineup last Friday against Thompson Rivers.
Trinity Western (1-7) comes in with just one win in conference play, but that came last Saturday as the Spartans tripped up Manitoba by a 63-54 margin to score their first victory of the season. Holly Strom has had periods of dominance this season for Trinity Western, as the fourth-year forward already has a 31-point game this season and ranks third in Canada West with an average of 19 points per game. She's also TWU's leading rebounder, pulling down an average of 6.5 rebounds per game.
The Spartans have missed the contributions of guard Sarah Cleveland, who was the team's second leading returning scorer coming into the year but hasn't played since being injured in a game against UNBC in early November.
The Cougars have had a big edge over Trinity Western since the two schools began playing each other in 1999, as the U of R has won 15 of 17 matchups overall heading into Friday's game. The Cougars have never lost to the Spartans in Regina, winning all 10 games including a 65-52 decision last January.
Fraser Valley (8-0) joins Calgary as the only two remaining undefeated teams heading into the weekend. The No. 2-ranked team in the last four CIS Top Ten polls, Fraser Valley will play winless Brandon on Friday night before Saturday night's showdown with the Cougars.
Seven of the Cascades' eight wins this season have been of the double-digit variety, with the lone exception being an 88-82 double overtime win over UBC two weekends ago. Fraser Valley opened the season with weekend sweeps over Mount Royal, Victoria, and UBC and is coming off of home victories over Manitoba and Winnipeg last weekend.
Sarah Wierks leads Fraser Valley in both scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg), while her sister Nicole is second on the team in both categories with 12.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. Aieisha Luyken also averages in double figures (10.6 ppg) and has a team-leading 41 assists this season, while Courtney Bartel averages 9.9 points per game and Kayli Sartori averages 9.3.
The Cougars and Fraser Valley met twice during the non-conference schedule, both in Regina. The U of R took a 75-58 win over the Cascades back on Oct. 12, but Fraser Valley replied with a 77-72 win over the Cougars two weeks later. Not including a 72-56 win over the Cascades in last year's Canada West Final Four, the Cougars have won five consecutive conference games over Fraser Valley.
