The University of Regina's men's basketball team settled for a weekend split with No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan after losing 89-74 to the Huskies in Canada West action in Saskatoon.
The game featured 12 lead changes as the two teams went back and forth over the first two and a half quarters, but Saskatchewan pulled away late in the third quarter. The Huskies went on a 15-2 run over a three-minute span late in the third, turning what had been a two-point Cougar lead into an 11-point advantage for the home side.
The closest the Cougars (1-1) got in the fourth quarter was when a
Darius Mole three-pointer cut the lead to 10, but the U of R was kept off the board for the next four minutes and Saskatchewan scored nine consecutive points to seal the win.
Stephon Lamar was on fire for Saskatchewan, hitting six three-pointers and leading all players with 40 points. Matthew Forbes ended up with 24 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Patrick Burns pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Huskies.
Phoenix College transfer
Frank Brown turned in another solid performance for the Cougars, ending up with a team-high 27 points.
Antonio Tate and
Brendan Hebert both had 11 points, with Tate registering a game-high five assists and tying Brown for the team lead with three steals.
After the season-opening split with Saskatchewan, the Cougars will travel east for a Thursday/Friday series against Winnipeg. The Wesmen (0-2) opened up their Canada West schedule last weekend with two road losses to Lethbridge.
