Midfielder Rachel Ramsden's third-minute goal would end up being the only offence of the contest as UBC took a 1-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday afternoon in the third-place match at the Canada West Final Four in Langley, B.C.
The match was played in a constant downpour which slowed the match down. UBC ended the contest with an 18-6 advantage in shots attempted and a 10-1 edge in shots on goal.
The lone goal came as UBC attacked quickly to start the match. UBC midfielder Taylor Shannik went up the right side and sent a through ball to Ramsden, who one-timed it past Regina keeper
Stephanie Possberg to give the Thunderbirds an early lead.
Leah Peric made one save – on a
Meagan Cormier shot in the 79th minute – to register the shutout for the Thunderbirds.
Possberg made five saves before
Kacey McFee took over at keeper for the Cougars in the 74th minute. McFee made four saves in 16 minutes of action.
The loss ended the season for the Cougars, who advanced to the Canada West Final Four for the first time in program history. The U of R is expected to return all but two players – defenders
Sarah Novak and
Kelsey Abstreiter – in 2013.
