Slow start sinks Cougars in 88-73 loss to Winnipeg

The University of Regina's men's basketball team fell behind early and couldn't recover, ending up losing 88-73 to the Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West action on Thursday night in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg opened the game on a 15-1 run and led 31-9 after a dominant first quarter. The Wesmen pushed the lead to 28 at the half and pushed the lead to 28 at the half. The Cougars went on a 24-7 run in the third quarter and cut the lead to eight in the fourth quarter after an Antonio Tate three-pointer capped a 10-1 run for the U of R, but that was as close as they would come as the Wesmen pulled away down the stretch.

Steven Wesley led Winnipeg with 25 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Nolan Gooding and Benny Iko both scored 16 and Andrew Cunningham collected 14 points.

Frank Brown led the Cougars in points for the third time in the team's first three Canada West games, hitting four three-pointers and scoring 18. Tate ended up with 16 points for the Cougar,s while Connor Burns scored 13 points and fell just one rebound short of a double-double.

Both Regina and Winnipeg now hold 1-2 conference records and are tied with Calgary for fifth place in Canada West's Prairie Division standings.

The two teams will meet again on Friday night in Winnipeg.
