Michelle Clark (pictured) scored 20 points as the University of Regina's women's basketball team improved its Canada West record to 2-1 with an 81-60 win over Winnipeg on Thursday night.
Clark was 8-for-14 from the field and hit two three-pointers, while
Lindsay Ledingham scored 16 and
Jennilea Coppola and
Megan Chamberlin both tied for the game high with 11 rebounds.
Kehlsie Crone came off the bench to score 10 points for the Cougars, who were without starting post
Brittany Read and contributing rookies
Charlotte Kot and
Katie Polischuk due to injuries.
Chamberlin added 10 points to lock up a double-double, while her 11 rebounds tied a career high for the fourth-year forward.
Lauren Anderson led Winnipeg with 11 points, but was held to 3-for-15 shooting from the field.
Off the opening tip, though, it was all Winnipeg. The Wesmen scored 11 of the game's first 12 points before the Cougars scored 13 consecutive points to grab the lead by the end of the first quarter. Regina kept the momentum in the second quarter, reeling off an early 11-0 run and leading by 11 at the half.
The Cougars led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter before a run by Winnipeg brought the Wesmen back to within seven points early in the fourth. The Cougars put the game away over the next two minutes, scoring 10 straight to push the lead back up to 17. The U of R led by as many as 25 points in the waning moments of the fourth quarter.
Second-year post
Alyssia Kajati, who has missed all of the 2012-13 campaign to this point while battling illness, returned on Thursday and collected four points and five rebounds in 18 minutes played.
The two teams will meet again on Friday night in Winnipeg.
