Box Score

The University of Winnipeg completed a two-game sweep over the Regina Cougars in Canada West men's basketball with a 92-74 win on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The teams were close through the opening period of action, but Winnipeg opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run to build a double-digit lead. The Wesmen led by 15 at halftime and by as many as 21 points in the third quarter, but the Cougars responded with an 11-0 run of their own to help bring the deficit back down to seven.

Winnipeg, though, had an answer. The Wesmen put a halt to the Cougar run with nine consecutive points of their own to get the lead back up to 13 going into the fourth quarter and held off the U of R down the stretch to register their second win in as many nights over the Cougars.

Steven Wesley led all players in both points (28) and rebounds (12) for Winnipeg, notching the game's lone double-double. Four other Wesmen scored in double figures, including Travis Krahn (16 points), Andrew Cunningham (14), Nolan Gooding (10), and Jordan Clennon (10).

Frank Brown was 5-for-9 from three-point land and led the Cougars with 19 points in 39 minutes of floor time. Paul Gareau had 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Connor Burns had 15 points.

The Cougars are back in action next weekend with a pair of rare afternoon games. They'll host Manitoba on Saturday and Sunday with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. on both days.

NOTES: Through four games, Brown ranks third in the conference with an average of 23 points per game and leads Canada West with 17 three-pointers made.
