Box Score
The University of Regina's women's basketball team completed the first undefeated conference season in school history after a 83-72 road win over Saskatchewan on Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon.
The Cougars finish the conference schedule with a 20-0 record to notch the 12th undefeated season in Canada West history and the first since Simon Fraser also went 20-0 during the 2004-05 campaign. Prior to this, the U of R's best conference record was 11-1, which they set back in 1989-90 while the school was a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
The No. 1-ranked Cougars opened up an early double-digit lead on Saturday, as
Michelle Clark's three-pointer gave the visitors an 11-point advantage with four minutes left in the first. Saskatchewan chipped away at the deficit and took their first lead of the game after a Dalyce Emmerson bucket three minutes into the second, but the Cougars countered with seven consecutive points and led by two at the break.
Regina put together two significant runs in the third quarter, including an 8-2 run early in the frame and an 11-2 run late in the quarter that got the lead up to 14. Katie Miyazaki's three at the end of the third cut the deficit to 11, and another three-pointer by Riley Humbert early in the fourth got No. 3 Saskatchewan to within six.
But the Cougars responded immediately, reeling off eight straight points to get the lead back up to 14. A late Saskatchewan run got the home side to within seven with a minute and a half left, but that was as close as the Huskies (15-5) could come.
Clark scored a game-high 18 points for the Cougars, while
Joanna Zalesiak scored 15 and
Danielle Schmidt added 10 points.
Lindsay Ledingham had 10 points and 10 rebounds to notch her sixth double-double of the season.
Saskatchewan's Kiera Lyons tied Clark for the game high with 18 points, while Miyazaki ended up with 14. Dalyce Emmerson scored 10 and led all players with 13 rebounds.
The Cougars will host conference wildcard recipient Winnipeg next weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series beginning on Friday night. The University of Regina will host the Canada West Final Four on Mar. 2 and Mar. 3 if the Cougars defeat Winnipeg in the quarterfinals.
NOTES: Victoria has recorded seven of Canada West's 12 undefeated seasons, while Calgary and Simon Fraser have two apiece ... Clark finishes the conference schedule with a school-record 57 three-pointers on the season.
