Alberta's Daniel Ferguson and Jordan Baker combined to lead the Golden Bears to an 81-69 victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in Canada West men's basketball action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Ferguson led all scorers with 26 points, while Baker had 21 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to record a huge double-double as No. 10-ranked Alberta improves to 11-6 with the victory.
Alberta led 22-21 after the first quarter thanks to a three-pointer at the buzzer by Baker, and held a four-point advantage after the second as the two teams traded leads six times during the first half. The Golden Bears slowly pulled away from Regina in the third quarter, and held the Cougars without a field goal for three and a half minutes in the fourth as the lead hit double digits late.
Andrew Bates added nine points for the Golden Bears, while Sahr Saffa scored eight and Robert Dewar and Todd Bergen-Henengouwen both chipped in with seven.
Regina's
Connor Burns had a career-high 23 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to record his third consecutive double-double, while
Gradyn Childerhose and
Paul Gareau both scored 11 points and
Brendan Hebert added 10. Gareau had 12 rebounds to notch a double-double as well.
The Cougars move to 5-11 with the setback.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS starting at 8 p.m.
