The University of Regina's women's basketball team held on for a tight 64-60 win over Saskatchewan on Monday afternoon in the consolation final of the 2012 CIS Championship at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
After the two teams traded leads six times in the fourth quarter, fifth-year guard
Carly Graham drove baseline and finished off the window to put the Cougars into the lead for good.
Brittany Read added a late layup to put the Cougars up three and the U of R held Saskatchewan off the scoreboard for the final 2:30 to secure the victory.
“I am extremely proud of how the girls came out and competed today,” Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. “
Carly Graham hit some huge shots for us when we needed them the most and it's great to see our two graduating players go out with a win.”
Playing in her final CIS game, Graham was 3-for-5 from three-point land and finished with a team-leading 15 points. Also playing her last game as a Cougar,
Joanna Zalesiak had 12 points and 10 rebounds to register the game's lone double-double and led all players with six assists.
Dalyce Emmerson scored a game-high 16 points for Saskatchewan.
The Cougars led by as many as seven points in the first quarter before Saskatchewan scored seven unanswered points to lead 19-17 after the opening frame. That momentum continued in the second, as the Cougars went scoreless for over six minutes and the Huskies scored 13 of the first 17 points in the quarter. Regina had an answer before halftime though, and an 8-0 run helped bring the Cougars to within four at the break.
The teams battled back and forth in the third quarter, trading leads five times after a Graham three-pointer gave the Cougars their first lead since the first. The teams were never separated by more than six points in the fourth quarter, and Saskatchewan had a chance to tie it late but a Katie Miyazaki three-pointer found the rim.
Michelle Clark added a game-high five steals for the Cougars, who shot 37% from the field in the win.
Brittany Read added nine points and eight rebounds, while
Danielle Schmidt chipped in with eight points.
Kabree Howard had 11 points for the Huskies, while Miyazaki pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds.
