The University of Regina's women's soccer team's four-game winning streak came to an end on Friday night after the Cougars were defeated 3-0 by No. 2 Trinity Western at Rogers Field in Langley, B.C.

Nikki Byrne, Krista Gommeringer, and Jennifer Castillo all scored for Trinity Western, while Kristen Funk's shutout helped the Spartans improve to 6-0-0 on the season.

Byrne opened the scoring in the 18th minute after she picked up a loose ball and fired it just inside the right post to give the Spartans the early lead. That stood as the only goal of the first half, as the next wasn't scored until Gommeringer extended Trinity Western's lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute.

The U of R's best chance of the game might have come in the 68th minute off the boot of Tayler Firth, but Funk was able to make one of her three saves to keep the Cougars off the board.

Castillo added an insurance goal in the 79th minute following an Alicia Tesan free kick.

Stephanie Possberg made eight saves for the No. 9-ranked Cougars, who suffer their first loss of the conference schedule and fall to 4-1-0 on the season.

The Cougars are back in action on Saturday night, as they'll square off against UBC (5-1-0) at Thunderbird Stadium.
