The University of Regina's women's basketball team's streak of 11 consecutive Canada West wins was snapped on Friday with a 61-58 road loss to the University of Victoria.
After the No. 9 Vikes jumped out to a nine-point lead after the first quarter, the Cougars replied with 10 consecutive points in the second and took a 29-28 lead into halftime. Victoria came out strong with six straight points early in the third quarter, taking a lead that the Vikes held on to for the remainder of the contest.
The game was close throughout the entire second half, with two six-point Victoria advantages standing as the biggest lead down the stretch. The Cougars cut that lead down to one on two occasions – including in the final minute after two
Lindsay Ledingham free throws – but Victoria's Tessla Rennie banked in a short jumper with the shot clock nearing expiration to give the Vikes a three-point lead with 13 seconds left.
The No. 2-ranked Cougars had two opportunities to tie the game in the waning seconds of the fourth, but
Michelle Clark wasn't able to connect on either of her attempts from three-point range.
Debbie Yeboah led Victoria (9-4) with 17 points and also had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Vikes to notch the contest's lone double-double. Rennie was strong off the bench for the Vikes, going 7-for-9 from the field and piling up 15 points in 26 minutes on the floor. Jenna Bugiardini also broke into double figures for Victoria, ending up with 12 points.
Clark led all players with 22 points for the Cougars, while
Brittany Read had 12 points and tied
Lindsay Ledingham,
Danielle Schmidt, and
Megan Chamberlin for the team lead with six rebounds before fouling out late in the contest.
The Cougars drop to 11-2 on the season and are now tied with both Calgary and Fraser Valley for the best record in the conference after the Cascades lost to the Dinos in Calgary on Friday night.
