The University of Regina's men's basketball team will have a tough test this weekend, as the Cougars host No. 4-ranked and Prairie Division-leading Alberta this Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Both games will tip off at 8 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's game.
The U of R will be in desperation mode this weekend, as the Cougars (5-9) enter Friday's game 4½ games behind of fourth-place Manitoba for the final Prairie Division playoff spot with eight games left on the conference schedule. After this weekend, the Cougars finish off the Canada West slate with two-game series against divisional rivals Calgary, Lethbridge, and Brandon.
Paul Gareau led the Cougars offensively last weekend, going 18-for-23 from the field and scoring 39 points over the two games.
Frank Brown still leads the U of R with an average of exactly 16 points per game and is shooting just a shade under 40% from three-point range for the season, while
Connor Burns is averaging 12.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
Alberta (12-2) has won three straight Canada West games and is coming off home wins over Thompson Rivers and UBC Okanagan last weekend. Like the women's team, expect Alberta's leading scorer to come off the bench. Third-year guard Kenneth Otieno has yet to start a game this year, but averages 18.5 points per game. Jordan Baker is also a big part of the team's offence, leading the Golden Bears in field goal attempts and averaging 18.3 points per game.
Coached by former Fraser Valley and Brandon bench boss Barnaby Craddock, the Golden Bears finish off their Canada West schedule with a pair of home games against Manitoba and back-to-back road weekends against Winnipeg and Saskatchewan.
