The University of Alberta led from wire to wire in a 79-65 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in Canada West action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Kenneth Otieno came off the bench to lead Alberta with 18 points, helping the Golden Bears improve to a Prairie Division-leading 13-2 conference record. Robert Dewar was 8-for-11 from the field and scored 16, while Todd Bergen-Henengouwen added 15 points and Adam Weir scored 11.
Connor Burns led Regina with a massive double-double, scoring 18 points and setting a career high with 14 rebounds.
Paul Gareau added 14 points for the Cougars, while
Frank Brown scored 11.
Alberta led by as many as 20 points midway through the third quarter, but the Cougars made things interesting. The home side went on an 8-0 run and could have pulled within eight points, but a three-point attempt missed and Alberta pushed the lead back up to 15 by the four-minute mark and cruised to the win down the stretch.
Alberta shot 48.6% from the field in the win despite going just 4-for-17 from three-point land. The Golden Bears also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Regina by a 44-36 margin.
The Cougars relied heavily on the long ball, hitting eight of their 29 attempts from beyond the arc. Brown was 3-for-7 from three-point land, while
Brendan Hebert scored seven points and collected a team-leading seven assists.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS (8:00).
