Lindsay Ledingham became the 10th player in school history to score 1000 career points as the University of Regina's women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep with a 74-61 win over Alberta on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Ledingham ended up with 22 points and eight rebounds, while
Brittany Read matched her with 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds as both players fell just short of double-doubles. Ledingham's 1000th point came on a free throw late in the fourth quarter as part of a 15-3 run that put the game away for the Cougars.
Michelle Clark also scored 14 points for the Cougars, who were outrebounded for just the fourth time in conference play.
Kendra Asleson came off the bench to lead Alberta (8-8) in scoring, going 5-for-6 from the field and ending up with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Katie Arbuthnot added 12 points for the Pandas.
The Cougars came out clicking on the offensive side of the ball, outscoring Alberta by a 24-16 margin in the first quarter. The home side allowed just nine points in the second quarter as the U of R took a 15-point advantage into halftime.
It looked like the game might get away from the Pandas after the U of R led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, but Alberta had other ideas and put together an impressive 14-3 run – capped by a three-point play by Anneka Bakker – to pull to within six points by the end of the fourth quarter. Alberta continued to hang around in the fourth until the No. 3-ranked Cougars went on their big run down the stretch to pull away from the pesky Pandas.
Alberta owned a 44-33 advantage on the glass but was plagued by 21 turnovers. The Cougars turned the ball over a season-low 12 times and shot 42% from the field in the victory.
The Cougars improve to 14-2 with the win and remain tied with Calgary (14-2) atop the Prairie Division standings. The two teams will meet next weekend in Calgary for a two-game series that might just decide the division title.
Alberta, which hosts Manitoba next weekend, falls into a tie with Manitoba for the fourth and final Prairie Division postseason berth.
NOTES: Ledingham joins Cymone Bouchard, Jackie Moore, Jana Schweitzer, Corrin Wersta, Trena Mott, Bree Burgess, Annette Pfeifer, Chelsea Cassano, and Deanne Shmyr in the University of Regina's 1000-point club.
