The University of Regina's men's basketball team had a massive third quarter to erase a halftime deficit, but couldn't hang on for the win as the Cougars lost 75-72 to Mount Royal on Friday night in Calgary.
The Cougars fell behind early after being outscored by a 24-15 margin in the opening quarter and also trailed by nine at the half, but a big 21-4 run by the U of R gave the visitors the lead. The Cougars increased the lead to eight points on two occasions in the fourth quarter - including with under four minutes remaining after a
Ryan Delwo triple - but Mount Royal scored 14 of the game's final 17 points to come away with the win.
A layup by James Lefebvre gave the home side the lead for good with just under a minute left, and a late Regina turnover essentially sealed the win for Mount Royal (4-3).
Lefebvre ended up with 10 points as he was one of four Mount Royal players to break into double figures in scoring. Mangk Akwl and Deng Awak both had 15 points for Mount Royal, while Kyle Wilson added 13 points in the win.
Delwo (pictured) had his best game in a Cougar uniform, hitting all five of his three-point attempts and finishing with a career-high 21 points in 26 minutes off the bench.
Brandon Tull and
Brendan Hebert both scored 16 for the Cougars, while
Will Tallman scored eight points and led all players with 11 rebounds.
The Cougars (1-6) will fly from Calgary to Vancouver to Prince George on Saturday morning as they travel to British Columbia's Northern Interior for a Saturday night game against UNBC (8:00 PST, canadawest.tv).
