The University of Regina's men's basketball team couldn't hang on to a big halftime lead and a Brandon Brine jumper from the elbow with four seconds left gave Lethbridge a 91-89 win on Saturday night.
The Cougars had a chance for the win on the ensuing possession, but
Brendan Hebert's three-pointer from several feet behind the top of the arc was no good and the Pronghorns escaped with the win.
After a furious comeback in the fourth quarter last night which ultimately fell short, the Cougars went on a huge 13-0 run to end the second half and led 48-30 at the break. But Lethbridge had a big third quarter as the Pronghorns outscored the U of R by a 40-26 to get right back into the game.
In the fourth, the Cougars led by as many as seven points near the midway point of the period, but a 7-0 Lethbridge run erased the advantage. Jared Baker's bucket gave Lethbridge a two-point lead with 24 seconds left, but on the next possession the U of R's
Jeremy Zver tied it up with a layup from in tight. That set up Brine's game-winning jumper, which gave Lethbridge its second win in as many nights and its seventh of the Canada West schedule.
Brine was 6-for-7 from three-point range and ended up with 27 points, while Morgan Duce was 6-for-9 from downtown and scored 22. As a team, Lethbridge hit 16 of its 31 three-point attempts in the win and shot 41% from the field overall.
Five players broke into double figures for the Cougars led by
Brandon Tull's 15 points, 12 of which came in the first half alone. Hebert was 4-for-5 from three-point land and scored 12, while
Kade Marra and Zver both had 11 and
Ryan Delwo scored 10. Both Delwo and Marra were a perfect 4-for-4 on the night.
The Cougars (2-8) will have three weekends off before heading to Winnipeg for the Wesmen Classic. They'll play Dickinson State, either Brandon or Ottawa, and one other team on the final day of the non-conference tournament.
